Job overview

Lumen Growth Partners is seeking a remote Community Support Moderator to help keep online communities respectful, useful, and aligned with their community guidelines. You will review posts and comments, respond to member reports, welcome new members, answer routine questions, and document actions using the team's moderation tools and procedures.

This is a general community moderation role, not a position limited to one platform or only to reviewing images and videos. Depending on the assignment, the community may use forums, subreddits, Discord servers, Facebook Groups, or other social platforms. The focus is on applying rules consistently, supporting members, and escalating issues that require additional review.

New to moderation? You can still apply

No prior paid moderation experience is required. Active participation in online communities is the main prerequisite, along with strong written English, fair judgment, and the ability to remain calm when discussions become heated. Paid training covers platform policies, moderation tools, documentation, and escalation workflows. A college degree or certification is not required.

Employment options and schedule

This role is part-time or contract. Part-time schedules typically involve 15–25 hours per week. Online communities operate 24/7, so shifts may include evenings, overnight hours, or weekends. Shift availability and any applicable premiums depend on the platform and assignment and should be discussed during the interview.

What you'll do

  • Review user-generated posts, comments, and discussions on forums, subreddits, or social platforms.
  • Apply community guidelines consistently, fairly, and without taking sides in disagreements.
  • Remove, hide, or flag spam, harassment, and other policy-violating content according to established rules and permissions.
  • Review member reports, assess the reported content, and escalate serious or unclear cases to the appropriate team.
  • Welcome new members and explain community norms, posting expectations, and available resources.
  • Answer basic community questions and direct members to the right information.
  • Log moderation actions, report outcomes, and relevant context in tracking systems.
  • Support community events and routine engagement activities when needed.
  • Flag emerging issues, repeated behavior patterns, or trends to team leads.
  • Escalate safety or legal concerns immediately through the designated process rather than trying to resolve them independently.
  • Maintain neutrality during heated discussions and avoid escalating conflict.
  • Document recurring patterns for review while respecting platform procedures and member privacy.

A typical moderation workflow

Exact procedures depend on the platform and its policies, but a routine workflow may look like this:

Review ContentCheck GuidelinesTake ActionLog DecisionEscalate if Needed

For example, you might review a member report, compare the reported post with the community rules, and remove or flag it if it violates policy. You would record the action and escalate threats, safety concerns, legal issues, or uncertain cases according to the team's process. Moderators should not make promises about outcomes or handle high-risk cases outside their authority.

Required qualifications

  • Strong written English for clear, professional community communication.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; no college degree or certification required.
  • Familiarity with online communities such as Reddit, Discord, Facebook Groups, or discussion forums.
  • Ability to stay calm during heated discussions and apply rules consistently.
  • Fair, neutral judgment and willingness to follow documented policies rather than personal preferences.
  • Attention to detail when reviewing reports, recording decisions, and identifying policy violations.
  • Reliability with scheduled shifts and willingness to escalate serious issues promptly.
  • Reliable internet connection and a quiet workspace suitable for remote work.
  • Willingness to learn moderation tools, platform policies, and escalation workflows through paid training.

Preferred qualifications

  • Previous moderation or community experience, including volunteer experience.
  • Familiarity with Reddit, Discord, forum, or social-platform moderation tools.
  • Comfort working evening, overnight, or weekend shifts.
  • Spanish/English bilingual skills.
  • Interest in community operations, trust and safety, online culture, or policy enforcement.
